What brings a diesel in

  • A diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) warning. On most on-road diesel trucks built from 2010 on, an SCR system injects DEF into the exhaust to cut NOx.1
  • A particulate filter message. Some diesels that only make short, low-speed trips never get hot enough for the DPF to clean itself.2
  • A Water In Fuel light. If it stays on, owner's manuals such as Ram's say not to start the engine until the water is drained from the fuel filters.3
  • Hard starts. Some diesels use glow plugs to preheat for starting, and starting fluid should not be used on them.4
  • Overheating, leaks, noises, loss of power, and the everyday repairs any truck needs.

How the emissions side fits together

  • A diesel's aftertreatment works in stages: an oxidation catalyst and the diesel particulate filter cut particulate matter, then DEF is injected and the SCR catalyst turns the exhaust into nitrogen and water.5
  • The Clean Air Act prohibits tampering with or defeating emission controls on EPA-certified vehicles, so the fix is repair, not removal.6
  • In Nevada, light-duty diesels based in parts of Clark and Washoe Counties need an annual emission inspection to register, including a visual tampering check.7 Diesels over 14,000 lbs GVWR are exempt from that test.8

What happens if a DEF warning is left

Under EPA's guidance from August 2025, a heavy-duty truck with a DEF fault gets a warning light for 650 miles or 10 hours, then a mild power limit, and the speed only drops to 25 mph after about four work weeks.1 That is time to get it looked at, not a reason to keep driving on it.

DEF also has a shelf life. Ram's guidance is that DEF kept between 10°F and 90°F lasts at least a year, and it can freeze at or below 12°F.9 Fluid that has cooked in a Las Vegas truck bed all summer is worth asking about.

Las Vegas diesel

Heat, idling and desert miles

Las Vegas averages about 78 days a year at 100°F or hotter.10 Stop-and-go traffic stresses an engine more than highway driving because it idles more, and in hot weather you should keep an eye on the temperature gauge.11 Towing, heavy loads, long idling and dusty conditions are also classed as severe service for a transmission.12

For the cooling system, transmission and truck tires on the same diesel, it is all here in one shop.

Questions people ask

Why is my DEF light on?

Most on-road diesel trucks built from 2010 on use an SCR system that injects diesel exhaust fluid into the exhaust.1 The light means the system has a fault or needs fluid; under EPA's 2025 guidance a heavy-duty truck gets a warning period before power is limited.1

Why does my diesel keep showing a particulate filter message?

On some diesels, driving only short, low-speed trips never lets the DPF clean itself; Ram's manual says as little as 45 minutes at highway speed can help it recover.2 If the message keeps coming back, have it checked.

Can a diesel particulate filter be removed?

No. The Clean Air Act prohibits tampering with or defeating emission controls on EPA-certified vehicles.6

Does my diesel need a smog check in Las Vegas?

Light-duty diesels based in parts of Clark County need an annual emission inspection for registration.7 Diesels over 14,000 lbs manufacturer GVWR are exempt from emission testing.8

How much does a diesel mechanic charge?

It depends on the vehicle and on what it needs, so this site lists no costs. Call (702) 432-6371 with the year, make and model and what is happening, or bring it in: walk-ins are welcome.

How long does diesel repair take?

It depends on the vehicle, the parts it needs and the day's work in the shop, so we do not promise a time here. Call (702) 432-6371 and ask before you come, or walk in during shop hours.
