Signs your engine needs a look

  • The check engine light is on. Steady means get it checked soon; flashing is more serious and can damage the catalytic converter, so avoid driving further.2
  • Rough running, misfires, lower fuel economy or a sluggish response, which failing spark plugs or ignition coils can cause.3
  • The temperature needle heading for the red. Pull over and shut the engine off.4
  • Low oil. An engine short on oil can overheat, and one starved of oil can seize.45

What happens if it is left

  • An engine running too hot can warp cylinder heads, blow head gaskets and, in extreme cases, crack the block.5
  • A flashing check engine light left alone can damage the catalytic converter.2
  • A small problem behind a check engine light can become a more serious and more costly one.1

Oil changes and the owner's manual

There is no single oil-change mileage that fits every engine. Most have a recommended interval of 5,000 to 7,500 miles, and the owner's manual comes first.6 AAA also says to follow the manual's definition of severe service.7 Short trips, heat, dust, towing and long idling are the kind of use that definition is written for, and Las Vegas driving has plenty of all of them.

Gasoline or diesel, bring the engine in with the symptoms you have noticed: when the light came on, what it sounds like, whether it runs hot. For diesel-specific systems (DEF, the particulate filter, glow plugs) see Diesel repair.

Heat and stop-and-go

Las Vegas averages about 78 days a year at 100°F or hotter.8 AAA says engines work extra hard in summer and the cooling system is what protects them from overheating.9 Stop-and-go traffic adds to it, because the engine idles more than it does on the highway.4 If your engine runs hot, start with the cooling system.

Questions people ask

Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?

A steady light needs attention soon but does not usually mean you need roadside help. A flashing light is more serious and can damage the catalytic converter, so avoid driving further.2

How often should I change my oil?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual, including its severe-service schedule. Most engines have a recommended interval of 5,000 to 7,500 miles.67

What damage can overheating do to an engine?

An engine that overheats can warp cylinder heads, blow head gaskets and, in extreme cases, crack the engine block.5

Is engine repair expensive?

It depends on the vehicle and on what it needs, so this site lists no costs. Call (702) 432-6371 with the year, make and model and what is happening, or bring it in: walk-ins are welcome.

How long does engine repair take?

It depends on the vehicle, the parts it needs and the day's work in the shop, so we do not promise a time here. Call (702) 432-6371 and ask before you come, or walk in during shop hours.
