The rules your trucks run under
- Every motor carrier must systematically inspect, repair and maintain all the vehicles it controls.1
- A commercial vehicle may not be used unless it passed a periodic inspection within the past 12 months, with the documentation on the vehicle.2
- Drivers fill out a written inspection report at the end of each day, covering brakes, steering, lights, tires, wheels and rims, and more.3
- Before the vehicle runs again, any listed defect likely to affect safety must be repaired, and the carrier must sign off on the repair.3
Tires on commercial vehicles
Federal rules set the minimums: at least 4/32 inch of tread in a major groove on the front (steer) tires of a bus, truck or truck tractor,4 and at least 2/32 inch on every other tire.4
No vehicle may run on a tire with exposed ply or belt, tread or sidewall separation, a flat or an audible leak, or a cut that shows the ply or belt.4 And tires may not run below the cold inflation pressure for the load.4 See Tires for trucks, trailers and equipment.
Keep the paperwork straight
Maintenance records are kept where the vehicle is housed or maintained, for one year, and for six months after the vehicle leaves the carrier's control.1 Call the shop to set up how your fleet works with us.
